About Scrappy Happiness...

From his start in high school band, Thrush Hermit, through his solo work and records with The Emergency, to his current project, Scrappy Happiness, Joel Plaskett has always found a way to expand his musical horizons and to challenge himself and his audiences.

For those who wondered how Plaskett could follow-up the success of his triple record, Three -- Scrappy Happiness is the answer. While Three was ambitious, Scrappy Happiness is both ambitious and innovative. The project harkens back to a time when music went from studio to radio to audience in an immediate way - without months of calculation and set up. Plaskett and The Emergency will record and digitally release a song a week for 10 weeks – all the while, documenting the process with vlogs, blogs and tweets. Two weeks after they’re finished, The Joel Plaskett Emergency will head out to begin a Canadian tour.

But recording and touring his own music is only one of Plaskett’s passions. In 2008, he launched a new label, New Scotland Records, and has already released albums by Steve Poltz, Al Tuck, Peter Elkas and Emergency drummer Dave Marsh. Plaskett has also just finished producing a New Scotland Records 7" vinyl single series, which includes artists, such as Jeremy Fisher, Shotgun Jimmie and Ana Egge. In 2010, Plaskett compiled and released the Thrush Hermit Box Set (Complete Recordings) to coincide with a sold-out Hermit reunion tour. He is also an award-winning producer with recent credits that include David Myles Turn Time Off and Sarah Slean’s Land from her new double-disc release Land & Sea.

(December 7, 2011) Halifax rockers Gloryhound have reason to celebrate as their current single “Electric Dusk,” is getting attention from radio across Canada.

Track is # 20 this morning on the MediaBase Active Rock Canada, and was added this week to:

In August 2010, the Gordie Sampson Songcamp was launched in Ingonish Cape Breton. Songcamp was conceived as a way for Gordie to share some of the experiences and insights he’s gleaned from his years as a successful songwriter with promising young Nova Scotia writers. For four very intense days, Gordie and Steve MacDougall lead co-writing sessions that result in dozens of great songs. Songcamp closes with a community concert where songs written during camp are performed for the public. In August 2011 Songcamp celebrated its first birthday with 6 returning writers from 2010 and 6 new writers. The group wrote over 30 songs together.

The Gordie Sampson Songcamp Circle at NS Music Week will be hosted by Steve MacDougall and will feature performances by 2010 and 2011 Songcampers including Carleton Stone, Molly Thomason, Mo Kenney, Breagh MacKinnon, Natalie Lynn and Dylan Guthro.

The Gordie Sampson Songcamp is supported by the Dept of Communities, Culture and Heritage-Province of Nova Scotia, Music Nova Scotia and SOCAN.

Classically Trained Performer Christa Borden Did Six Tracks Of Her Album With Mixer Bob Clearmountain (Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Pretenders And Songwriter-Producer Jeff Trott (Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks) Releases First Single In Canada.

From the heady superstar company that Christa Borden has been keeping, it looks like those “Empty Bottles” she sings about on her single are quickly being filled with mainstream success. Official Video is HERE.
She’s done a radio tour for her debut album I Rhyme With Orange (David Carver Music), performed shows everywhere from Newfoundland to Los Angeles, opened for Aerosmith in front of 35,000 people, and appeared on the cover of Hollywood Weekly Magazine.

Six of the 11 tracks on the collection were helmed by renowned songwriter/producer Jeff Trott (Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks) and mixed by Bob Clearmountain (Bruce Springsteen, Rolling Stones, Bryan Adams, Paul McCartney, Pretenders…).

Borden attributes the rise of “Empty Bottles” and the strong reception to I Rhyme With Orange to the fact that long before she could drop such names as Bob Clearmountain and Jeff Trott, she approached the writing of the album with an edgy, realistic DIY attitude, centered around the importance of standing out. Kind of like the one word in the English language that is so unique and special, there is no word to rhyme it with: orange.

“In this day and age of widespread digital distribution,” she says, “there are millions of artists creating wonderful projects they’re sending out online without ever leaving home. In this changing industry, aware of the cost of trying to promote myself as an artist, I figured there was a chance that I Rhyme With Orange could be my one album, or at least my best shot. I tried to be a realist and choose songs that were truest to my heart so that in 15 or 20 years someone could look back on it and say this was an honest album, this is who I am and the discoveries that the characters in my songs make are very personal and important to me.”

Coco Love Alcorn sings joyful soul; a combination of her diverse musical influences including Jazz, Pop, R&B and Folk. Her voice is hailed as ‘extraordinary’ (Vancouver Province), ‘beautiful’ (Canadian Musician) and ‘stunning’ (Star Phoenix). Her playful and witty character, love of improvising and her willingness to engage fearlessly with the audience has made Coco Love Alcorn a mainstay on the Canadian music scene.

Her 2009 album Joyful (Sound of Pop / Fontana North) has been a hit with fans and industry alike. Indie radio stations all across Canada have shown good support spinning many of the tracks with 'Intellectual Boys' often charting. 'Revolution' has become a favourite with many CBC hosts and was awarded a videofact grant. 'I Got A Bicycle' topped the charts at a jazz station in Quebec City and has helped to garner strong support for Coco in the cycling community. She shared the bill with Molly Johnson at the 2010 Toronto Bike Union Gala and also graced the cover of Momentum magazine in the spring of that year.

About PLAY: In September of 2010, Coco Love Alcorn had her first baby, a girl named Ellie. Coco knew she'd need to take a break from touring but didn't want to feel disconnected from her music. So she set about writing and recording a new album at home. During the very special time of bonding with her new baby Coco spent whatever time she could in her music room, often with Ellie on her lap. On October 2nd, 2010, ECMA & SpinCount held a member's night at the Seahorse Tavern in Halifax, Nova Scotia to showcase our first round of four acts from across the regions of Atlantic Canada. Andy Brown, Tim Chaisson & Morning Fold, Telfer, and Alert the Medic all put on an incredible show for a packed house - and we had a great team filming each set! The team @ Said Productions set out to develop a profile video for the event in its entirety, as well as separate instalments for each performing artist.

While Kim Stockwood’s world spills out well beyond the shores of Newfoundlandand Labrador, she is anchored heart and soul to this place. She seeks out what is special here and searches for a voice that will reflect her longing and love for the province. One way she has found to capture that voice is to go Back To The Water.

When Kim left her beloved native spot eighteen years ago she could not have known the paths she would travel or the heights she would scale. Kim is an accomplished artist on many fronts, from singer to songwriter to television host and radio personality. These things she does with humor, grace, and class. Her hit songs, her awards and accolades, her solo work and her work with Shaye, have seen her mature as an artist. Her wealth of experience and her longing for home have laid the foundation for Back To The Water.

This album is filled with the sound and fury of a place that surges upward with a fist of rock and grabs life from the sky’s air. The album is enriched and enlivened by Newfoundland musical luminaries and session players who would shame the Nashville Scene. It is a great source of pride for Kim to have her wonderful Dad play with her.

The power of the sea can be heard here, roaring beneath Kim’s soaring vocals. The album, Back To The Water, is indeed a musical trip through the beating heart of the province. Surrounded by water, yes, her place is made rigid by granite pillars like those Cliffs Of Baccalieu, that Kim navigates so beautifully as she dances among the tunes of her native land.

Listen to her Let Me Fish Off Cape St. Mary’s and you are taken to both a real and a mystical place. You feel the ache of the Petty Harbour Bait Skiff and taste the dread of the daily sea drama that punctures our ancestral memories. This song is tempered by the skip, caper, and sly nod of the Squid Jiggin Ground, and the sense of fun found in Feller From Fortune. There is a certain beauty in that balance.

Kim has chosen her songs carefully, with the romance of the St. John’s Waltz held arms length against the everlasting anguish of Atlantic Blue. Ron Hynes is served well here. The title track, Back To The Water, was written with her close friend, Damhnait Doyle. One can only imagine what gems might pebble the paths Kim will travel, or what crowning heights she will scale before Now I’m 64 becomes her mantra. In the meantime, we revel in the present smiling land and Thank God We’re Surrounded By Water.

QUEENS PLACE GALA FUNDRAISER A ROUSING SUCCESS!

Liverpool : March 3, 2011 - The gala fundraiser for Queens Place that took place on February 26th was a huge sold-out success! Thanks to contributions from very generous sponsors and attendees, over $7500 has been raised for the Queens Place project! The evening of high caliber entertainment featured Charlie A’Court, Music Nova Scotia’s Entertainer of the year for 2009; double ECMA nominees Tim Chaisson and Morning Fold and Pony and the Pistols.

The night began with a VIP reception for about 45 guests in the Best Western’s Larruper’s Lounge, sponsored by the Best Western Hotel and Conference Centre and Alimento Catering and Kitchen Works. Conversation at the reception was lively and filled with anticipation for the night to come. Once the music began, over 130 people had arrived to enjoy the music and help support and celebrate the campaign for Queens Place. The room was so full, that tables and chairs needed to be removed to allow for dancing!

Ticket sales weren’t the only source of revenue for the fundraiser, a 50/50 draw brought in $274 and the silent auction prepared by the South Shore Chamber of Commerce’s 10 to 20 project brought in a further $1787!

Buzz about the event has been ongoing ever since the night of the 26th, with many people looking forward to similar events in the future. Mayor John Leefe said “this response is indicative of the desire of the people in this community to enjoy music of this quality. We anticipate that Queens Place will be able to attract some larger concerts and the support and excitement we received through this event really brings that message home.”

Stew Horton spoke on behalf of Brady Home Building Centre, Presenting Sponsor for the evening, “On behalf of Brady’s we would like to congratulate everyone involved in making this event a huge success. Your hard work paid off not only in raising a significant contribution for Queens Place but also in creating a fantastic night of entertainment. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to support the Gala”. Other sponsors that helped contribute to the success of the evening were: The Best Western Hotel and Conference Centre, Alimento Catering, CKBW, Allen Fownes, FinancialPages.ca, Sobeys, the 10 to 20 project, SpinCount and QCCR. ECMA E-News - SpinCount Featured Artist of the Week - Keith Mullins!

Keith Mullins has played music all of his life. His roots are in Cape Breton Island, where a family and culture of music fostered his passion and ability. At the age of 14, Keith started entertaining bar crowds with fellow band-mate, Steven MacDougall (now from Slowcoaster). Having since completed a music degree and self-directed studies in Cuba and Africa, Keith has turned his passion into his profession. He has toured the world performing with numerous bands of fame, such as: Lennie Gallant, Bruce Guthro, Jimmy Rankin, Grammy-award winner Gordie Sampson, Dave Carroll (from the Youtube viral video “United Breaks Guitars”), Jennifer Roland, Havanafax, John Campbelljohn, Caledonia, Jimmy Swift, Garrett/Dutch Mason, Melissa McLelland, Sarah Slean, Paula Cole, Divine Brown, and many more.

Keith has also developed and facilitated some highly successful workshops. Starting with his drumming workshops 8 years ago, this venture has blossomed into a salsa workshop with an 8 piece Latin band partly from Cuba with salsa dancing, and a songwriting workshop with Keith and Steve Bowers. He has delivered these workshop to groups of all ages; across Canadian schools, at special events, and at festivals.

Keith now looks to bringing his songs to these same audiences.

In April 2010, while performing at Dollywood TN with a Peruvian Cajon troupe and a Trinidad Steel Drum group, Keith made a trip to Nashville to record a record of his written songs with the assistance of Grammy-award winner Gordie Sampson. Keith’s record entitled “Localmotive Farm” is a collection of writings created through his life on a back road farm near Stewiacke NS.

Described as folk soul, the record is as varied as the different styles of music in which Keith plays and the album is flavoured by the incredible range of talented musicians that contributed to the recordings. Back up vocals are performed by Amy Sampson and Dutch Robinson (Ohio players). The track “Si es Loco” is Cuban-style, with the gifted guitar playing of Jorge Chicoy (Dizzie Gillespie, Buena Vista Social Club). Jorge is known as “The Jewel of Cuba”, as coined by Fidel Castro himself.The record also includes hang drummer David Charrier (France), beat-boxer Jay Andrews, fiddler Anna Ludlow, Gordie Sampson, and Bruce Dixon. The main backing band is Caledonia from Halifax. Keith sings and has written all of the songs along with a couple of co-writes, one with songwriter Steven Bowers (Trouble) and one with Halifax artist DJ DeCoste(Is the City). He dabbles with bass and guitar on the record as well as playing all of the drums and percussion.

SPINCOUNT ARTIST OF THE WEEK: THE JIMMY SWIFT BAND

The Jimmy Swift Band’s sound is a fusion of the best in both rock and electronic music. The result is the creation of something different than anything else, a style uniquely JSB. Their live show is a frenzy of hypnotic rhythms and an unrelenting energy that is both addictive and unstoppable.

Few independent bands have had the longevity and consistent draw on the Canadian club circuit as the JSB. They have developed a solid fan base from coast to coast, and continue to appeal to a wide demographic of music lovers all over the world. JSB’s fourth studio release is scheduled for late 2010. For this project the band has embraced even further the electronic elements that have always been a big part of their live show's popularity while holding strong to their love of rock and roll, psychedelia, and extended improvisation.

Jay Smith is an award-winning songwriter and guitar player based in Halifax, NS. Jay first emerged on the East coast music scene as guitar-player and frontman for Rock Ranger who released two critically acclaimed albums. Matt Mays recruited Jay to join his band El Torpedo with whom he recorded the Juno-nominated album 'Terminal Romance'. Jay has played countless shows across North America with Matt Mays & Rock Ranger including support for such acts as Kid Rock, Sam Roberts, Chris Cornell & Blue Rodeo. Hosted by Jonathan Crouse of Hank FM and CKBW, the concert & silent auction will take place at the Best Western Hotel and Conference Centre and feature the musical talents of Pony & the Pistols, double ECMA nominees Tim Chaisson and Morning Fold with headliner Charlie A’Court; Music Nova Scotia’s Entertainer of the year in 2009!

Tickets are $25 each and VIP tickets are $50 and include preferred seating and admission to an exclusive cocktail reception before the event starts. SPINCOUNT ARTIST OF THE WEEK: CHRISTINA MARTIN

For nearly a decade Christina Martin has been on a musical journey. From recording her debut album Pretty Things (2002) in Austin, Texas, to opening for Wilco, it was clear that music was her path. It was not long after she returned home to Halifax, Nova Scotia she started playing the café/bar circuit and met esteemed musician Dale Murray (Cuff the Duke). On a whim they recorded Two Hearts (2008), an album that won her Pop Recording of the Year at the 2009 East Coast Music Awards, as well as two Nova Scotia Music Awards for Female Artist of the Year and Pop Recording of the Year in 2008.

Martin and Murray teamed up once again to produce I Can Too which features guest appearances by Blue Rodeo’s Greg Keelor and Cuff the Duke’s Wayne Petti. With her ethereal voice, tracks like “I Fear I Am,” conjures up classic rock jangles and the rhythmic sway of Roy Orbison. “Daisy,” draws on Tom Petty’s nostalgic narrative-driven approach to the craft, while Murray’s lap steel on “Hello,” echoes the melodic slide- guitar playing of George Harrison. But its title track, “I Can Too,” that is the album’s pinnacle. This song opens with Martin almost whispering her hearts confessions, while Murray’s instrumentation slowly builds layers among Martin’s soaring vocals. The song embodies the sentiment of the record; its bold, rhythmic, vulnerable and inspirational. I Can Too is currently nominated for Four East Coast Music Awards.

SPINCOUNT ARTIST OF THE WEEK: IAN SHERWOOD

2011 is promising to be quite a year for Ian Sherwood,a singer-songwriter with a lot to celebrate. The release of his third CD, And Now The Fun Begins, is generating a lot of buzz, including an ECMA nomination for Konica Minolta Male Solo Recording of the Year. Sherwood’s unique blend of roots, R and B and a kind of lyrical folk rock, coloured with his incredible storytelling skills, create a sound and style that simply can’t be pigeonholed.

Much like the artist. His heart is in the stories he creates through his writing, but his versatility means he’s in demand as a session musician playing sax, guitar and providing background vocals, as well as arranging and creating for other musicians. All these contributed to his win, for the second time, as Music Nova Scotia’s Musician of the Year

Adding to the eventful potential for 2011: his recent engagement to Halifax based actress Genevieve Steele, who is expecting the couple’s first child in April. That lucky baby is already showing signs of enjoying the musical life: at a house concert recently Genevieve is reported as saying he/she ...”didn’t stop dancing all night!”

During the week of January 14th to 22nd, 2010, Music PEI will host its Music Week & 10th Annual Awards Gala. This year Music PEI is pleased to announce that K-Rock 105.5 and Ocean 100 have taken on the role of title sponsor for the gala event. Building upon last year’s success, Music Week will be replete with showcases, workshops and an art show, culminating with the Awards Gala on Saturday, January 22nd.

Art for Music kicks off Music Week beginning on January 14th at The Guild and running through January 23rd. SPINCOUNT ARTIST OF THE WEEK: THE OLYMPIC SYMPHONIUM

Crafting delicately arranged folk-pop that drips with bittersweet melodies, soaring harmonies, and an awful lot of passion, The Olympic Symphonium have been sharing their quiet world with us since 2005. They are and always have been a collaborative effort between three multi-instrumentalists, songwriters, and friends: Nick Cobham, Kyle Cunjak, and Graeme Walker.

After piecing together each of their first two albums from sporadic recording sessions stretched out over many months, The Olympic Symphonium have opted this time for a change of pace. A much quicker pace.

The band locked themselves away in a large, empty, secret location in Fredericton, free of distractions, with longtime engineer Brad Perry and gave themselves a week to record an album. With the clock ticking away, the band went to work.

Sketches of songs were prepared beforehand and then developed in the studio with all members being on hand at all times; a new experience for the Olympic Symphonium and one they feel has created a cohesive feeling for their third full length album.

The jury is in and the line-up for Music Nova Scotia and Halifax Pop Explosion’s Battle to Warped Tour II has been decided. Fifteen bands have been selected to participate in the 3 preliminary rounds, taking place at the Seahorse Tavern on January 18, January 25, and February 1. One finalist from each round and two wild cards will advance onto the final battle on Tuesday, February 8th to vie for a number of prizes and a spot on the largest touring festival in the world, The Vans Warped Tour 2011.

We're very excited to announce some great new additions to the Shivering Songs festival:

David Myles, a Fredericton hometown hero, is currently touring on his 4th album Turn Time Off, which was produced by Joel Plaskett and recently picked up two Nova Scotia Music Awards. David will be hosting the Saturday afternoon songwriters circle at Wilmot Church, entertaining folks with hisperfectly-timed comedic delivery and breaking hearts with his beautiful songs.

Grant Lawrence, author/broadcaster/musician, will also join the Saturday afternoon songwriters circle as a storyteller. Adventures in Solitude, his first novel, was just recently released and is a collection of amazingly-digestible Western Canadian history lessons tied with hilarious anecdotes. Grant will be captivating the audience with stories of the sunshine coast and will bring an interesting twist to the format of the song-circle.

For years, the gregarious and encyclopedic Lawrence has hosted the top-rated CBC Radio 3 Podcast with Grant Lawrence, a weekly showcase of Canadian independent music. Grant also hosts Grant Lawrence Live, a live and interactive daily program on CBC Radio 3′s popular web radio station, also airing on Sirius 86. Grant can be heard throughout the week on various CBC Radio One programs such as DNTO, Spark,All Points West, On The Coast and has been a frequent past contributor to Q and Sounds Like Canada. Grant also hosts many major music events, such as the Polaris Music Prize Gala, the Western Canadian Music Awards and various festivals around North America, and conducts music industry seminars and keynote addresses on music and media related topics.

ECMA Announces Artists Performing at Atlantic Brand Confabulation

(Charlottetown) - The East Coast Music Association (ECMA), in conjunction with the Atlantic Brand Confabulation, announced today that Andy Brown, Alice Stops Time, The Sidewalks and Richard Wood will perform at the Atlantic Brand Confabulation at Casino New Brunswick in Moncton on January 14. Legendary Kiss band member Gene Simmons will be the keynote speaker.

“This is an incredible opportunity for artists to play in front of influential music industry and brand experts,” says Su Hutchinson, executive director of the ECMA. “Our goal is to really provide additional year-round opportunities for our artists and we are thrilled to be part of incredible event.”
Interested ECMA artists submitted a short video as part of the application process and final selections were made from an experienced jury of industry professionals from the ECMA and Brand Confabulation. These artists will play in front of Gene Simmons and the crowd of 850 at the event.

East Coast artist Dave Carroll of the widely- popular United Airlines video will also be sharing the stage with Gene Simmons. "Gene Simmons is an undisputed master of branding and self-promotion and so I'm really looking forward to meeting him and honoured to share his stage in Moncton,” says Dave. “My story is first and foremost a ‘music story’, so the fact that I will be able to add some performance to my presentation is an added bonus."
The greatest marketers, branders, and leaders will be united at the first Atlantic Brand Confabulation at Casino New Brunswick, in Moncton on January 14th. The Confabulation is above all else an amazing learning and networking opportunity with people from across the country joining to celebrate and learn even more about the world of personal and business branding.

Stone Mary's undeniable rough 'n tough brand of rock 'n roll is what gets people in the door, but what keeps them is their gritty rhythms and intoxicating vocal performance. Christine Campbell fronts the band with glorifying confidence and swagger. She wraps audiences around her finger with her voice and drops their jaws with her breath-taking guitar solos. With influences among the band varying from Led Zeppelin and The Black Crowes, to Queen and Guns 'N Roses, Stone Mary pays homage to their forefathers while maintaining a sound that is soulfully their own.

Originally a three piece, the founding members of Stone Mary, Christine Campbell (vocals and guitar), Brad Stevens (bass) and Dave Lidstone (drums), all grew up in different small towns on Prince Edward Island before meeting up in Halifax, Nova Scotia. There they quickly brought their original mix of rock, blues and funk to the streets before adding a fourth member in Alex MacDonald of Nova Scotia (guitar and vocals) to help round out their sonic onslaught of rock!

SpinCount Music and Music Nova Scotia offer educational conference incentive

SpinCount Music and Promotions and Music Nova Scotia partner to give The New Music Experience educational conference attendees a chance to win free DMDS uploads to radio and video destinations.

SpinCount Music and Promotions is offering two prizes for the SpinCount/DMDS contest, which consist of the following:

. Grand Prize Winner: Release / distribution to radio PLUS video distribution via DMDS (to 50 stations for radio and to 3 destinations for video*)

. Runner Up: Release / distribution to radio via DMDS to 30 stations.

. SpinCount will advise & assist both winners and will specifically select the radio destinations in order to maximize the potential at radio.

The total value of this package is $1100.00.

The contest is only open to those who attend The New Music Experience educational conference. On Friday and Saturday a ballot box will be set up inside the doors of the conference for bands and individuals to enter their name into the draw. Winners will be drawn and announced at the educational conference on Saturday and prizes will be awarded to winners who are present to accept in person. If the winning band or individual is not there to claim their prize, a new name will be drawn.

SPINCOUNT ARTIST OF THE WEEK: CHRIS COLEPAUGH and the COSMIC CREW

Chris Colepaugh makes southern dipped old-fashioned rock that bridges the gap between old school doubleneck guitar crunch and moaning alt-country pedal steel wail. He and The Cosmic Crew have performed at festivals throughout Canada and the United States and have toured extensively with over fifteen national ( CAN & US ) coast-to-coast tours where part of his US itineraries have included dates with Government Mule, North Mississippi Allstars and Grady. Awards and nominations are plenty and include the East Coast Music Awards, The International Acoustic Music Awards, The Toronto Music Magazine Awards, the Contact East Touring Excellence Awards, the MNB Awards and many others. In 2010, Chris Colepaugh won MNB Best Rock Album and Best Musician for his album Missed A Page.

Chris Colepaugh's catalogue of music has also had its share of accolades as well. His song "Caught Up To You" was featured on the international hit television show Degrassi : The Next Generation ( Episode 808 ). "Spotless Mind" from "In Your Backyard" was part of the film "Break The Cycle" from Ireland. Chris was also a semi finalist in the Starbucks Music Maker Series in Vermont and his song "Coffee Shop" was featured alongside of Moe., Bob Weir and Umphrey's McGee on the 2007 - 10,000 Lakes Festival CD. In addition, there are the numerous compilation CDs he has been featured on.

However, it is not just his Cosmic Crew that brings music to Chris Colepaugh, it's also his friends. An observer with a keen eye would have spotted him playing drums for Star Académie winner Wilfred LeBouthillier, playing pedal steel across Canada, France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Germany with International Canadian sensation Roch Voisine, invited by Gordie Johnson on stage to perform pedal steel and guitar with Grady, and playing sessions for artists such as International Daniel Pearl Fiddler Samantha Robichaud, multi-country-award nominees Melanie Morgan and Darcy Mazerolle, francophone artists Annie Blanchard, Anique Granger, Trisha Foster, Jason Lang and many more. And with producing securely under his belt ( he spent two weeks in Texas at Willie Nelson's Studio mentoring producer methods with Gordie Johnson ) there is no stopping this guy!

Chris is endorsed by Sennheiser Microphones, Gibson guitars ( full feature and interview on Gibson.com USA ) and Traynor Amplifiers, and has signed a deal with his management company and Fontana North Distribution.

Antigonish singer-songwriter Molly Thomason has had a song placed on Degrassi: The Next Generation, which is planned to air Friday, October 29th at 9 PM on Much.

This is an exciting development for the young singer-songwriter: Degrassi is one of Canada's longest running and most successful teen TV shows, playing both nationally and internationally.

The song chosen for placement, Kiss Me, was number 1 on the East Coast Countdown for three weeks when Molly's debut CD, Through the Static was released last year.

That CD, produced by Tim Feswick, was nominated in 2009 for New Artist Recording of the Year and has this year been nominated as Pop/Rock album of the year in the same category with East Coast favourites Alert the Medic, Dwight Deon, Glory Hound and Wintersleep.

While Through the Static continues to generate interest, Molly is beginning work on her next CD, with Halifax producer Dale Murray. They expect to have that CD ready for release in June 2011.

Remedy is a funk-rock trio out of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Formed in 2008, made up of Steve Harley (singer/guitarist), James Bond (bass) and Gil Roy (drums), Remedy's sound is vivid, unique, and intimately tight. The vast majority who review the band's music state that they sound like no-one else.

Remedy released their debut album, "Paleofidelity", in the spring of 2009. Their first single, "Up from the bottom" was played on at least 50 Canadian commercial and college radio stations from coast to coast and select stations in the U.S. (New York's Indie Revolution Radio, and L.A.'s Indie104). Four months later, the band had it's second nation-wide radio single, "Rude Reaction". This East Coast Countdown producer's pick became one of only 2 Canadian tracks featured on RadioRnR's latest CD compilation "New Faces, New Music", available worldwide digitally and "Borders" retail (Western U.S.) since January 2010. Remedy was also awarded a SXSW showcase through RadioRnR.

The video for "Up from the Bottom" was shot in November '09, with multi-award-winning director Aram Kouyoumdjian, Atlantic Film Festival's "Best Cinamatographer", Chris Ball, and editor Jesse Harley, who also just won a 2010 Atlantic Film Festival Award for "Best Short" (which he wrote/directed/edited and co-produced).

Remedy's second full-length album, "The Tyranny of the Smug" was released digitally, Sept 28/2010, on every major internet vendor (CDbaby, iTunes, etc). All new album tracks are also available for preview on Myspace, ReverbNation, Facebook, MyMusicSite, iLike, and the bands official website, www.remedymusic.ca

In 2011, Remedy plans another Canadian radio single release for "I Will Come to you", a video release, an East Coast regional tour, a U.S. College release (via Tinderbox) and a return to the band's own studio (Cresthill) to begin work on their third album. (Halifax, NS) – Alert The Medic have released the third single from their latest album, We, the weapon. “The Weatherman Pt. 2” was launched to national radio and the music video can be viewed on their youtube site – www.youtube.com/alertthemedic.

The video offers a glimpse into the powerful lyrics and compelling rhythms presented in “The Weatherman Pt. 2”. Those familiar with Alert The Medic’s 2006 Self-titled album are brought back, with haunting familiarity, to part one of the continuing story.

The project was filmed, directed and edited by photographer and filmmaker Thomas Cantley. Mr. Cantley has been making his presence known in the Halifax arts community since his unexpected relocation back to Nova Scotia from New York. He is currently working on a documentary film,“Ballsy Journey”, which chronicles his own personal battle with testicular cancer. The Late Night Parlour is a mix of Teresa Doyle’s own songwriting and tunes from the swing and Latin era. The title track takes you to the tropical sensuality of Tobago and a mountainside rum shack called The Late Night Parlour. Inspired by performing with Soca musicians at the rum shack, Teresa began writing songs from the languor of her beach chair. Her songwriting is sassy, sexy, danceable and fun. POGEY has played at every major American Irish festival. Their unique version of Celtic rock has gained them fans on every continent. And, they released a highly-anticipated sophomore album this summer. With rising popularity and growing tour schedule, the group hasn't had to worry about what their name is slang for in Canada: government relief given to the unemployed. POGEY's fiery live show combines electric guitar, fiddle, mandolin, acoustic guitar, bass, drums and four-part vocal harmonies to produce a trademark Nova Scotia sound.

POGEY is Ray Mattie, Jonny Grant and Warren Robert. Joining the group for several shows this year is drummer Zach Smith and fiddler Donald MacLennan. The band is the vision of Nova Scotia native, Ray Mattie, who moved to Ontario in 1997 to search for like-minded musicians to help break into a new music market - an all-original band with a folk/Celtic-based sound. Not finding exactly what he wanted, Mattie moved back to Nova Scotia in 2000. Flash back to 2002. Aselin Debison was signed to Sony Classics world wide. She was the youngest signing in the companyʼs history. The next four years brought a whirlwind that saw young Aselin visit Japan twice, where she had several charting singles, release two CDʼs, which garnered extensive radio and video play and multiple award nominations. She also had her own PBS/CBC network television special, ʻAselin Debison: Sweet is the Melodyʼ. Her touring and media appearances brought her to some of the most prestigious stages and events including: Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto, Carnegie Hall, Parliament Hill, performances for the Queen of England, the Prime Minister of Canada and many theatre and festival performances abroad.

Widespread corporate restructuring at Sony Music globally throughout 2006 saw many of the key people involved in Aselinʼs youthful industry ascent suddenly out of work and an extensive corporate merger between Song Music and BMG Music brought only more layoffs and artist rosters slashed domestically and internationally. What many young people might take as a serious blow was taken in mature and a proactive stride by the still teenaged Aselin Debison. While not completely abandoning her love of music, writing and performing; she shifted her focus to a university education for the next few years. During this time, she continued to write, co-write and record demos, all pointed toward a day when a new fresh independent recording would be released.

That time has come. ʻHomeward Boundʼ is that release.

SPINCOUNT FEATURED ARTIST OF THE WEEK: TIM CHAISSON & MORNING FOLD

Tim Chaisson is no stranger to the spotlight. With three solo albums under his belt, and now the release of Tim Chaisson and Morning Fold’s independent musical gem Broken Hearted Beat, Chaisson has more than 17 industry awards or nominations and currently has no less than five P.E.I. Music Awards nominations for Songwriter of the Year, Group of the Year, Recording of the Year, Pop Recording of the Year and Entertainer of the Year, and an East Coast Music Award nomination for Best Pop Recording.

While much of the album is spawned from his own seeds of creativity as primary songwriter, Chaisson notes that renowned Canadian-bred musicians Joel Plaskett (Thrush Hermit, Joel Plaskett Emergency) and Gordie Johnson (Grady, Big Sugar) were crucial in realizing Broken Hearted Beat’s wide scope and boldness.

Co-penning material as a team and utilizing Johnson’s invaluable experience as a musician and producer for Broken Hearted Beat, Chaisson, Johnson and crew captured the live essence of the band at Plaskett’s studio before heading down to Willie Nelson’s Austin-based Pedernales Studios in order apply finishing touches.

Moreover, Chaisson concludes that with the influence of his mentors, the abilities of Morning Fold and his penchant for entwining the plethora of influences a large family has bestowed up on him into a distinct sound, Broken Hearted Beat is easily his most cultivated, proficient effort to date. But, he alludes, there are still many more to come.

“My East Coast roots are elemental to making this album unique,” he waxes philosophically. “I was lucky to have such a large family that introduced me to so many diverse forms of music. I think they all come out on this album. The same thing applies with the rest of the band. They have that in- flux of inspiration from their families and they’re fantastic multi-instrumentalists. As for me, well, I’ve been doing this since I can remember ... I’m gonna be in it for the long haul.”

The Hobos are of another time. A time when pleasure usurped profession; when live music provided the soundtrack for excess; this period they bring to life on stages across Canada. With a stage show that harkens back to the days of the travelling salesman, The Hobos are the cure-all elixir for those requiring entertainment. Their brand of music is authentic and complex, mixing equal parts of the carnival, farm, tavern and circus. Two acoustic guitars, a banjo, mandolin, doghouse bass and a fiddle create the unique backdrop over which the 6 vocalists paint malevolent yet harmonious works of art. Their music drives and swings while they stomp - the crowd smiles and joins in.

This past month started off with the Grass Mountain Hobos driving home from playing a number of shows at Mariposa Folk Festival, in Ontario followed by an appearance on Live! with Regis and Kelly as the house band on Tuesday, July 13th. The same day that they played on Live! with Regis and Kelly the Hobos hopped on a plane and crossed the ocean. A swing, bluegrass, blues, and folk infusion The Grass Mountain Hobos will be playing at a number of clubs and festivals across the UK from July 15th to August 2nd. Following the UK dates upcoming touring highlights for the Grass Mountain Hobos include performances at 25th anniversary of Lunenburg Folk Festival and a tour of the US Eastern Seaboard.

The Motorleague is the anthem to every bad break-up or shitty boss you’ve ever had. Crafting songs that have been called “The Anthems Of The Call Center Generation”, this band has been running on all cylinders since inception.

The music is fast or often faster – based on stoner rock riffs played at a higher RPM and choruses that are catchy as sin – but won’t leave you feeling guilty for liking it.
Their appeal lies not in business plans, hair styles, fancy myspace graphics, or major label marketing, but in the simple belief that honest rock and roll music speaks for itself – and that DIY only works if you actually do the work.

The Motorleague released Black Noise in May of 2009 through The Forward Music Group. The debut was produced by Ian Blurton (C’mon, The Weakerthans) and has received much critical acclaim.

The band has recently been nominated for 3 East Coast Music Awards (Dec 2nd 2009) for Group Recording, Loud Recording, and Video Of The Year. The band’s 2nd video from Black Noise is scheduled for release on March 4th, 2009.

The Motorleague will return to the studio on February 8th, 2010 with producer Steve Rizun (The Flatliners, The Creepshow) to continue to prove that a Canadian East Coast rock band does not need to be a self fulfilling prophecy.

Carleton Stone DTBW works hard. At the end of the summer of 2007, Dwight d'Eon had become a household name to millions of people across Canada. Setting out to make his fourth album,Turn Time Off, David Myles knew he was ready to try something a little different. His earlier releases, Things Have Changed (2006) and On The Line (2008) had already established his reputation as a versatile, genre-bending artist with a knack for effortlessly straddling jazz, blues, folk and pop styles. Produced by acclaimed Nova Scotia musician Joel Plaskett, Turn Time Off is a smooth, soul-infused pop record that pays tribute to crooners and lovers alike.

A gifted and spirited songwriter, Myles was a winner in the 2009 International Songwriting Competition where he was judged by the likes of Tom Waits and Brian Wilson. He was also recently named to represent New Brunswick (his home province) in the Great Canadian Song Quest competition on CBC Radio. His last album, On the Line, won Folk Recording of the Year at the 2009 East Coast Music Awards, where he was also nominated as Male Artist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year. Myles was also won the Folk/Roots Recording of the Year for Music Nova Scotia in 2007.
